Orbera: Non-Surgical Weight Loss Q & A

What is ORBERA™?

ORBERA™ is a non-surgical, stomach balloon procedure that allows patients to lose up to three times as much weight than with diet and exercise alone. While ORBERA™ is designed for individuals who need to lose a significant amount of weight, you must be willing to adapt to a healthy lifestyle that includes small, healthy meals, and regular exercise. The FDA approved ORBERA™ in August of 2015, and by 2016, Dr. Gaston started performing the procedure. This procedure is intended for adult patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40 who have attempted more conservative weight reduction alternatives. ORBERA™ is the number one global market leader for gastric balloons with more than 220,000 ORBERA™ balloons distributed worldwide in over 80 countries.

Why should you consider an ORBERA™ procedure?

Being overweight isn’t just hard on your self-esteem, it creates huge health risks. Carrying extra weight puts you at a higher risk for:

  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes

If you’re overweight, you may also experience more aches and pains as you age. Your body has to work harder to accomplish daily tasks, which causes more wear and tear on your bones, muscles, and joints.

Beyond the benefits of losing weight, ORBERA™ is a non-invasive, safe, and effective way to lose weight. Because the stomach balloon is temporary, there’s no permanent changes to your digestive system, as with weight-loss surgeries.

This patient lost 55 pounds in six months with the Orbera non-surgical weight loss program with Metropolitan Gastroenterology Consultants. Her BMI went from 32 to 24.

Feria Goodwin, Dr. Gaston's patient, dropped 8 dress sizes, lost 68 pounds as of January 2019 and is one of the two 2018 Orbera challenge contest winners who won $10,000. She is the 3rd of Dr. Gaston's patients that has won a weight loss challenge. Click here to learn more about her weight loss journey.

You also have the option of coaching and support to increase your success. With the help of a team of experts, you can learn the right way to nourish your body, and keep it moving. Learning to live a healthy life before Dr. Gaston removes your stomach balloon is essential to weight loss success.

How does a stomach balloon work?

When Dr. Gaston does an ORBERA™ procedure, he places a balloon into your stomach that’s filled with a saline solution. The balloon stays in place for six months, taking up space in your stomach, and creating less room for food. This makes you less hungry, helps you feel full quickly, and stay full longer.

Dr. Gaston places the balloon through your mouth, which means there’s no surgery or incisions. Performed as an outpatient procedure, it takes about 20 minutes to complete. At six months, the balloon is removed in the same way it was placed. Through a non-surgical procedure done under a mild sedative, it is deflated first then removed. Coaching continues after balloon is removed at six months for a total of 12 months.

*Data on ORBERA™ collected in the U.S. clinical trial show that at month six, the ORBERA™ group achieved a mean of 38.4 percent Excess Weight Loss (EWL). The weight loss is rapid with the majority of weight loss typically occurring in the first three months of treatment.

With more procedures performed than any other gastroenterologist in Chicago, Dr. Gaston has the experience and know-how to help with your weight loss. Contact Metropolitan Gastroenterology Consultants today to schedule your appointment. Call or book online now.
